I spent some time in the studio with Lewis Walker when they were developing Bornsick, a new solo piece co-commissioned by Serpentine and Edinburgh Art Festival commission. Lewis mostly worked alone and their days seemed very structured: warming up to a special soundtrack with cues, rehearsing earlier developed material, improvising on new material, … They took time for every part, it wasn’t rushed. For each part of the working day, the music determined the energy, often still a placeholder.

Later in the process, video documentation played an important role. Large parts of the rehearsals were filmed on a phone and edited together with music: the structure of the piece was developed in film editing software.

During the preview / try out, a detailed cue sheet contained video stills to help cue different parts of the music.
